As the founder and owner of two small businesses, I have to say that this book has helped me tremendously. It addresses all the issues we consultants, freelancers, and small-product manufacturers have to deal with on a daily basis without resorting to lofty, B-school philosophies that sound good on paper but fail to generate results in the real world of working businesspeople. Kudos to Economy and Nelson for updating their book and listening to their reviewers! I’ll be sure to purchase the updated edition as well!

Make no mistake: “Dummies” books are strictly for beginners, and “Consulting for Dummies” is no different. Despite their elementary approach to subject matter, the series is a wonderful introduction to many topics, including the wide world of consulting. Start here for an overview, and move on to bigger and better books after you understand the basics.

I am coauthor of Consulting For Dummies 2nd Edition along with my colleague of many years, Bob Nelson (we also co-wrote the best-selling book Managing For Dummies).
We made numerous changes and improvements to Consulting For Dummies 2nd Edition, many of them in response to feedback we received on the 1st Edition of the book (including the many reviews here on Amazon.com). Believe me when I tell you that we took each and every one of your comments to heart.
The result is a much stronger book on the topic of the business of consulting — a book that Bob and I are certain is the best possible resource available today for both new and experienced consultants.
Specfically, we:
– Added much more information on the legal and financial aspects of starting and running a consulting business (Chapter 5: Getting a Grip on Legalities, Finances, and Ethics).
– Added much more information on the most effective ways to set consultant fees (Chapter 6: Setting Your Fees) AND an entirely new chapter on Advanced Pricing Strategies (Chapter 21, which covers value-based pricing, performance-based pricing, contingent fees, and more).
– Added an entirely new chapter on the consulting sales process (Chapter 12: The ABCs of Selling).
– Added an entirely new chapter on Troubleshooting Common Consulting Issues (Chapter 19).
– Added an entirely new chapter on how to grow your consulting business (Chapter 20: Building on Your Success).
– Dropped all of the old (and now out of date) interviews with consultants, and added brand new in-depth interviews with highly successful consultants Bill Eastman and Peter Psichogios.
– Engaged technical editor Ray Wilson — a very successful, nationally regarded management consultant in Boulder, Colorado — as technical editor on the book. Ray added his own ample insights and many years of experience into the mix.
– Pared away anything that wasn’t directly pertinent to helping our readers become better and more successful consultants.
While we can’t guarantee that you’ll earn a million dollars as a consultant after you read our book, we CAN guarantee that you’ll find a LOT of extremely useful information, no matter what kind of consulting you do or where you live. Bob and I really care about this book and we want it to be the best book possible on consulting. We’re always happy to get your email messages and answer your questions. We would love to hear about your successes — and your challenges. Our websites and email addresses are easy to find — a Google search will quickly take you there.
Thanks for considering Consulting For Dummies 2nd Edition — we hope you enjoy reading the book as much as we enjoyed writing it, and that it helps you build a better and even more successful consulting business.
